Both STAR 2008 and Galileo's Legacy 2009 astronomy conferences are called "participants’ conferences" because the usual distinctions between organizers and attendees, between speakers and audience are greatly diminished. Participants assist in planning the conference sessions in advance and managing the conferences as they unfold. They chair sessions and are members of discussion panels.  High school, community college, and university undergraduate and graduate students interact with amateur and professional astronomical researchers and development engineers renowned  in their field. We honor the many commercial firms that have made the small telescope revolution available to all – highly advanced designs and technology at affordable prices. Funding is sought to assist especially deserving students. Other participants pay their own way, including registration. Costs are minimized as much as possible, and the locations are delightful, so the  conferences can double as family vacations.
